2009 - Don Quart
Ageless Wonder - Terrific Athlete
|
Don Quart played on the Dolphins 7 National Championship teams and scored more touchdowns than any other Dolphins. He finished second on the Dolphins all time scoring list. Incredibly his 19 years on the Dolphins was only a little over half of his 36 years in touch football. He started playing intramural touch football in 1967 at Loyola University in Montreal. A supremely talented athlete with "wheels" Don was a a rusher with the Montreal NADS who played in the same division as the National champion Montreal Panthers. After moving out west to B.C he joined Pony Express which was formed by Paul Benwick. [See Paul Benwick ]"Pintsize as he is affectionately known ...was and still is a truly gifted athlete. Primarily used a wide receiver due to his blinding speed and also on punt and kickoff returns, we would occaisonly use him as our QB due to injury of our starting QB. Humble, yet with so much confidence, when I would see and call out "double rush", he would simply say, "so what" and routinely beat them both. Such a joy to play with, we marvelled at his breathtaking acceleration, often turning sideways and turning on the jets between two defenders scampering downfield for yet another TD," recalls Paul. "After the Premier Divsiion was formed to increase competition, he led us to an undefated season in Rec. Don then moved on to the Jets who were QBed by John Alward. He was playing with Jets in a Victoria tournament when he was approached by Harvey Alter and John McClain to come play for the Dolphins in 1985. . "I wasn't the fastest guy out there but I had a technique. I'ld run at 80% speed and at the last second accelerate to create the opening," says Don.
Don who played receiver, second in on the strong side, says he liked the drive the Dolphins had. "Everyone had the same drive,.. the same target.. to win the Canadian Championship." After his retirement from the Dolphins, Don and Don Shumaker played a year with their sons on the Dragons. |
7 National Championships with the Dolphins
MVP on Offence at Nationals in Saskatoon Instrumental in the Dolphins 222 consecutive game winning streak Jim Harris, who everyone could hear wherever on the field, with his great wit and booming voice used to bellow out, "Don Quart - you ageless superstar !,... or "look at the wheels at that guy". Congratulations Don on a stellar career. Could not have happened to more of a team player. -Paul Benwick |
