2009 - Trudy Lyons
Captain of the Mardi Gras Defence
|
"Trudy was a tenacious player and accepted nothing short of winning. ...she studied other teams and knew their tendencies, strengths and weaknesses. She challenged her teammates to turn it up a notch when the going got tough and she led by example. A true Winner!!" Trudy Lyons is best remembered for her determination and smarts on the field. It was Trudy and Deb Rodgers who started the Gals [See Mardi Gras ] and recruited Colin Farrell [See Colin Farrell ] to help coach. Trudy is described as a student of the game, she was not the fastest, or most physically gifted player but she was a unmatched strategist, and was consumed by a will to win. That determination and smarts allowed her to excel at any position on defence. "As a coach you had to be prepared for the games and better have a solution to a Team if we were having trouble...cuz Trudes would be looking at me with her wild, intense eyes and I didn't want to feel her wrath if I didn't come up with the right solution!!! I loved having her on the Team!" says Larry Doan [See Larry Doan ]who coached Trudy when she played for Mardi Gras and later the Kats. Her teammate Deb Huband [See Deb Huband ] on Mardi Gras describes Trudy as "a tough competitor who always brought her best effort. She expected the best from herself and her teammates. She was tough on you if you needed a push but was always in the trenches doing her part. She was a smart player who was strong offensively and defensively more because of her smarts than her size or athleticism." Trudy retired in 1995. |
5 National Championships with Mardi Gras
2 National Championships with The Kats Trudy Lyonns - the smartest player I have ever played with - I think many of us that played with Trudy would say we learned the game mostly through her, she was not incredibly fast but she was shifty, she would always find a way to catch the ball, find the holes offensively, had incredibly sure hands - if the ball was thrown in Trudy's direction it was a sure reception - defensively she studied the game and the team we were playing - she called the defense and "played chess" with the opposing quaterback, she was like a "pest" in hockey she could (and did) get under the skin of the opposing teams, an incredibly supportive and great teammate. Personally I don't think there is or was a more commonsumate player than Trudy -Morgan Kyle She was a consistent receiver and an aggressive defender. -Marla Britton Trudy Lyons...Basketball standout, very, very, smart, our Captain in Touch Football every year I played. Highly skilled player, reliable hands on offence, precise patterns, excellent rusher, corner, DB. If I had to go into Battle ...and I could only choose one other person from the whole Touch Football League...I would choose Trudy Lyons. Her last name says it all. " -Lynn Leclair |
